Accoya Case study – Nicoll Russell Studios, Broughty Ferry, Dundee

Nicoll Russell Studios have been based in their Broughty Ferry office for over ten years, and have a rolling programme of renovation in the former car showroom. As a major practice, they can’t simply down tools while everyone moves out, so work on the office has taken place in phased developments.

A recent phase took place when Senior Partner Rick Russell re-designed the exterior of the office, selecting a timber façade above the glazed frontage. He chose a sharp, half-checked horizontal profile (RW5c) in a panelled style with stainless steel screws fixed at board ends. Supplementary stainless steel fixings are secretly nailed at 600 mm centres.

The timber Rick selected was Russwood’s Accoya, stained a deep honey colour. He chose Accoya because of its knot-free, clean look, its guaranteed durability and improved stability. This stability results in paint finishes lasting at least twice the lifespan of that applied to unmodified timber, thereby significantly reducing maintenance costs.
