• Materials used, what are the advantages offered by different timbers over other outdoor materials
• Pre-planning, the size of the deck, its location and relation to your building and neighbouring buildings, additionally there are a number of regulatory requirements
• Performance, the different characteristics of each of the timbers that could be use, such as durability, appearance and strength and how these compare with the cost and benefits offered
• Sub- structure, preparing the site, what supports and timber substructure are to be used
• Deck boards, many interrelated issues have to be considered such as: size, length, thickness, spacing, are slip resistant boards required, how are they going to be fixed
• Superstructure, what components are required, do you need guard rails, how will you manage stairs, what are the regulatory requirements relating to these
• Construction, where will materials be stored, are footings in place and dry
• Finishing and Maintenance, Does you deck need finished, what are the options, how often do you need to treat it, do you want it coloured
