100 years of the Sutherland Cup

2023 marks 100 years of the HIS Sutherland Cup, one of the most sought-after trophies in the sport of shinty. Newtonmore won the first final in 1923, defeating North Bute 3-2, so it’s a full circle moment for the team as they retained the title this weekend.

A tough match

Glen Mackintosh opened the match with a goal in the first 13 minutes, cinching a second goal after Skye’s Shockie MacLennan’s equaliser making it 2-1 Newtonmore in the first half.

Skye was determined, opening the second half with another goal from Shockie, putting the pressure on. Charlie Ferguson put Newtonmore back in the lead with a goal in the 55th minute, before Glen sealed the win with a hat-trick. Newtonmore Assistant Manager Mark Taylor said ‘our third goal was crucial whilst the fourth gave us breathing space.’

Newtonmore have now won the cup 15 times, more than any other team in the league!
