Creative ways to use leftover floorboards in every room
When ordering new flooring, it’s always wise to allow a little extra wastage for cutting and fitting. We typically recommend 10-15% just to make sure. But what happens if you’re left with spare boards once your project is complete? Instead of letting them go to waste, why not repurpose them into stylish, practical additions for your home? Here are some creative ways leftover floorboards have been transformed into beautiful, bespoke features.
1. Shelves with character
Spare boards can easily be turned into shelves, adding warmth, texture and extra storage space to kitchens, living rooms or home offices. In a recent project completed by Sangster and Co, oak flooring boards were crafted into kitchen shelving that perfectly complements the flooring below. The result is both practical and beautifully cohesive.

2. A hand-crafted table
Larger offcuts can be used to create statement furniture. A great example comes from our Glasgow office pod, where Larch boards were repurposed into a stunning custom table. By echoing the flooring material, the table ties the whole space together and creates a striking, but cosy feel. Trying to match wood tones and types can be tricky so by repurposing leftover flooring, you can guarantee your furniture will match with your floors perfectly.

3. Feature wall panelling and units
For a bold design statement, consider using floorboards as wall panelling. We love this project, which combined feature wall panelling with custom-built storage units and drawers, all crafted from leftover boards. This approach adds depth, texture, and a sense of luxury to any space.

4. A timber headboard
Leftover floorboards can also be used to create a gorgeous headboard. This simple addition adds warmth, character, and a natural focal point to the bedroom – with the bonus of tying in seamlessly with your flooring.

5. Bespoke storage
Winner of the BBC1’s ‘Best House in Town’ and it’s easy to see why with creative and interesting details throughout – like this boot room, made using leftover floorboards from the kitchen. Homeowner Chrissie said “It ended up being a great idea, utilising existing materials and keeping costs low.”
Repurposing leftover floorboards is not only a sustainable choice but also a creative way to bring unique, personalised details into your home. Whether you opt for shelves, furniture, or feature walls, the natural beauty of timber can be enjoyed far beyond your floor.
