Revitalising timber cladding: the SiOO:X system in action

Naturally weathered timber cladding is a desirable finish for many projects. Whilst it is possible to achieve a fully weathered grey appearance, factors such as a project’s location, surroundings or the shape of the building can lead to differential weathering, and an uneven appearance. This is where SiOO:X steps in, a patented wood protection system that protects and transforms timber surfaces to a uniform silver-grey colour over time. Russwood offer SiOO:X as a factory coated system with our cladding products, but it can also be used retrospectively on existing projects to refresh the appearance, or to mitigate the effects of uneven weathering. A good example of this transformation can be seen with this architect’s home, built in 2014 on the Moray Coast.

A weathered façade

South-facing cladding bears the brunt of the elements. By 2022 the cladding on this property had developed some degree of differential weathering, with mixture greys and browns at odds with the clean architectural lines of the building. Keen to rejuvenate the cladding, the homeowner reached out to Russwood for advice on how to bring a uniform appearance to the timber.

 The transformation: from patchy to patina

We’ve been monitoring the house year after year, capturing the curing process as it unfolded. This summer, we revisited the property to capture new photography and video footage demonstrating the full extent of the transformation.

The timber, once uneven and weathered inconsistently, is now a consistent silver patina thanks to the application of SiOO:X. Beyond the aesthetic improvement, the timber is now shielded against Scotland’s unpredictable climate, ensuring long-term durability and the desired appearance.

The solution: SiOO:X Prewash

Our technical team recommended starting with SiOO:X Prewash. This cleaner gives the surface a deep clean, removing any accumulated surface dirt and preparing the wood surface for application of the SiOO:X System.

After applying the prewash, the homeowner treated the façade with the SiOO:X Original Wood Protection System. This system penetrates deep into the wood fibres, curing and developing a flexible and breathable silica network within the wood surface. Over time as the SiOO:X cures, the façade develops the characteristic uniform silver-grey tone that SiOO:X is known for.
