Pale timber flooring: achieving the Scandi look

Marketing Assistant

In the current landscape of interior design, minimalistic and tranquil living spaces inspired by the principles of Scandinavian design have gained huge popularity. In this blog, we will take a look at how pale timber flooring can be used to create a living space which effortlessly captures the signature Scandi aesthetic, with reference to some notable Russwood projects.

What is Scandinavian design?

Scandinavian design is an artful marriage of simplicity and functionality. It encapsulates the essence of modernist principles with a touch of natural warmth. Rooted in the Nordic region, this design philosophy champions clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and a harmonious blend of form and function. Scandi style embraces minimalism without sacrificing comfort, often characterized by neutral colour palettes, natural materials, and an emphasis on light, airy spaces. If desired, our pale timber flooring can help you achieve the Scandi look within your home.

Choosing the right colour and finish

Oak flooring is a versatile and durable option which comes in a variety of colours and surface finishes. In this project, the client chose European oak flooring in shade Cashmere to enhance the bright living space and add a touch of warmth.

Very pale white floors will give a clean, modern aesthetic, but will need slightly more maintenance. Smoked or grey colours offer more depth of colour. For those looking to achieve a Scandi look we recommended looking at Chalk, Pearl, Silk, and Cashmere and Dune from our Oak ranges.

Consideration should also be given to the texture of your floor. Our wire brushed finish is best for high traffic areas, whereas our semi-smooth finish offers a sleek, classic appearance.

Maximising light

Dark Nordic winters mean maximising natural light is crucial in Scandinavian homes. Large, bright windows along with pale floors helps to achieve the bright and airy feel of Scandinavian interiors. White floors reflect light and can help make a space feel bigger, and using the same flooring throughout will create an open airy feeling and a natural sense of ‘flow’ from one room to the next. This project, which has used our European oak flooring in shade Oat creates an atmosphere of serenity and timeless elegance that we love.

European Mountain Larch

Our new range of ‘European Mountain Larch‘, is an excellent option for Scandi inspired interiors. It is supplied pre-finished, machine oiled with Hardwax-Oil in a choice of three different colours: ‘Natural’ for a warm golden tone, ‘Soft White’ for a subtle, natural colour, or ‘Frost White’ for a pale, truly Scandinavian feel. The grain pattern, attractive figuring and knots, provide character and warmth to this species.

Maintenance of pale timber flooring

Pale flooring requires slightly more maintenance than darker flooring options to keep it looking at its best. We recommend using Osmo Wash & Care which ensures gentle, yet effective cleaning of your floor. You should also make an effort to sweep/vacuum your floor where possible, to remove any dust or debris which can accumulate. Through these dedicated measures, your pale timber flooring will continue to look good for years, reflecting the enduring spirit of Scandinavian design.
