What to consider
Suitability for painting varies greatly between cladding products and requires careful selection of species, profile, finish and paint type to ensure optimal performance.
We recommend choosing a modified timber such as Accoya®, Thermopine® or Thermopine® Clear as the enhanced stability of these products means paint coatings can last up to three times longer than on unmodified timbers, substantially reducing maintenance requirements. Opting to finish your cladding with a traditional film-forming paint coating brings high durability, offering a long lasting finish with minimal maintenance when used appropriately.
However, it’s essential to note that despite its durability, some maintenance is inevitable. Consider whether you will require a fire retardant treatment for your timber, as this will affect the paint coating available. Russwood recommend Remmers and Burnblock for a fully certified coating system.
Colour options
Choose from a select range of translucent and opaque paint coatings. Opaque paint coatings – like our popular jet black matt finish – provide a solid colour, while the natural figuring of the timber can be seen through translucent paint coatings. Because of this, it’s important to note that the appearance and longevity of translucent colours can vary considerably depending on the chosen species and surface finish. Application of painted coatings
In order to achieve a consistent, uniform finish it is highly recommended that paint is applied in controlled factory conditions. Russwood’s team of experienced coaters apply our paint system within our state-of-the-art, in-house coating facility, using modern vacuum coaters. The timber, first dried to the optimum moisture content, undergoes a comprehensive coating process, enveloping all sides for a consistent, flawless finish. If considering on-site application, it is important to weigh up the cost of labour, painting equipment, potential need for scaffolding and adverse weather conditions. Consistent dry conditions are imperative for several consecutive days to prevent potential problems arising from excess moisture. The inherent unpredictability of the UK’s inclement weather throughout the year poses a considerable risk of causing substantial delays on-site. Meanwhile, we provide a set price, quoted upfront, covering all aspects – preparation, coating, drying, storage, and delivery, meaning everything is taken care of.
Easy maintenance
All painted cladding will require some maintenance, but with a little care, painted cladding will perform well and stand the test of time. Regular annual inspections are recommended to detect signs of damage or wear to the paint film at an early stage. Light cleaning may also be required to remove accumulations of surface dirt. The frequency of the maintenance cycle depends on factors such as cladding species, surface finish, profile, building location, and exposure to the elements. When maintenance is needed, the process entails a thorough approach, including cleaning, sanding, and recoating the cladding. While it may require some effort, this comprehensive method ensures the longevity and aesthetic appeal of your cladding.
