4 min read

As 2024 draws to a close, we’re celebrating a fantastic year of events that connected us with architects, designers, and industry leaders across the UK. From launching our new Glasgow office on Candleriggs to participating in thought-provoking panel discussions and winning industry awards, each event has been an opportunity to build relationships, share ideas, and showcase the exciting future of timber in design. Let’s take a look at the highlights.

ASA Design Awards 2024

In March, we collaborated with makmono to supply timber for the bases of the Project of the Year Awards at the Aberdeen Society of Architecture (ASA) Design Awards, held at Union Kirk in Aberdeen. The bases, crafted from Scotlarch®, Grandis Select®, Accoya®, and Thermopine®, showcased intricate designs inspired by each of the winning projects. Russwood was thrilled to sponsor the Project of the Year Award, won by Stallan-Brand for their project Union Terrace Gardens.

London Festival of Architecture

June took us to the London Festival of Architecture where the theme for 2024 was ‘Reimagine‘. Our panel event was designed to explore timber’s role in modular construction, sparking conversation around sustainable and innovative uses for timber within the city’s architectural landscape. It was an incredible opportunity to collaborate with Waugh Thistleton Architects and Ecosystem Technologies and to engage with architects and designers passionate about sustainable design. For those interested in a more detailed look, we dedicated a full blog post to the event.

Russwood’s Glasgow Office Launch

In August, we were delighted to celebrate the opening of our new office in the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City. This new space not only allows for team expansion, but also provides an inviting setting where we can collaborate more closely with our architecture and design clients across the region. To mark the launch, we hosted a networking evening filled with food, drinks, and games, creating a relaxed, fun atmosphere for guests to meet our team and explore the new office. The night was filled with engaging conversations and a sense of excitement, setting the tone for our growing presence in Glasgow.

Abodo Sip and Sketch

October brought us to the Abodo Sip & Sketch event at Autex Acoustics, which focused on “Closing the Loop – How Product Circularity Is Reshaping the Building Industry.” This engaging panel discussion on circular economy principles was moderated by Charlie Law of Timber Development UK and featured several voices from across the industry, including our Senior Architectural Liaison Technician, Charlotte Wark. Charlotte spoke alongside Sidonie Immler from Foster and Partners, Lewis Marshall from Abodo, and Alice Atiola from Autex, and contributed to an insightful discussion on sustainability and innovation in building. A special thanks to Abodo and Autex Acoustics for their warm hospitality and to all the attendees for making it a truly memorable evening.

HIAA Awards 2024

Next, we headed to the Highlands and Islands Architectural Association (HIAA) Awards in Inverness. Russwood was both a sponsor and an attendee, and our founder, John Russell, had the honour of presenting the Best Use of Timber award. The award went to Fraser Architecture LLP for their stunning project, Horisary House and Sauna, on the Isle of North Uist. It was fantastic to see such creative use of timber, especially with a number of projects featuring Russwood products, and to connect with others based in the Scottish Highlands and surrounding areas.

EAA Awards 2024

This month, we sponsored the Edinburgh Architectural Association (EAA) Awards ceremony at West Court, Edinburgh College of Art. Our Marketing Director, Claire Howie presented the Wood Award. The winning project was Craigleith Garden Studio by Kris Grant Architect in collaboration with Bothanna Cabins – congratulations on a fantastic project! It’s great to be part of such a prestigious event that celebrates the best in architecture across Edinburgh.
