SiOO:X revisited: how our projects have weathered over the years

3 min read

At Russwood, we’ve always believed in choosing materials that stand the test of time – both in how they look and how they perform. One of the products that demonstrates this ethos is SiOO:X Wood Protection: a clever weathering treatment that speeds up the natural greying process of timber, helping it to age beautifully and consistently. In this blog, we’re revisiting a few standout projects from our archive to show how the finish evolves — and impresses — years after installation.

Russwood Gable End | SiOO:X Mid Grey | 7 Years Later

Located in the Highlands, this striking gable end at Russwood HQ was clad in SILA Select® with SiOO:X Mid Grey in 2018 as part of our R&D facility. Now, seven years on, it showcases the refined weathered aesthetic that SiOO:X is known for.

Despite facing tough Highland weather — from snow and sleet to summer sunshine — the cladding has weathered evenly. The original colour has softened over time, giving the building a contemporary yet natural appearance with very little upkeep.

What we love: The cladding has mellowed to a refined grey tone, retaining its contemporary appeal while blending naturally into the Highland landscape.

Carport | SiOO:X Original | 8 Years Later

Installed in 2017, this carport project specified SILA Select® cladding and Glulam treated with SiOO:X Original and fixed using SIHGA’s L-GoFix® screws for a clean finish. Eight years later, the timber shows the gentle silvering and softening of the grain that SiOO:X is known for.

The uniformity across different elevations — despite varying levels of sun and rain exposure — demonstrates the system’s impressive ability to age consistently, even in more sheltered or exposed conditions.

What we love: The stainless steel fixings keep the look clean and modern, while the timber itself remains in excellent condition after nearly a decade.

Temple Farm | Thermopine® | SiOO:X Original | 4 Years Later

Temple Farm, a large-scale architectural project, features Thermopine® cladding treated with SiOO:X Original. Installed in 2019, it shows how SiOO:X works beautifully with thermally modified timber to create a natural, low-maintenance façade.

Over time, the surface has taken on a soft silver tone, while the natural grain of the wood is still visible. The result is a durable and attractive exterior — perfect for high-performance architecture.

What we love: The combination of Thermopine® and SiOO:X offers exceptional dimensional stability and long-term aesthetic appeal, proving ideal for both contemporary and rural settings.

Monachyle Beag | Scotlarch® | SiOO:X Original | 6 years later

Tucked away in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Monachyle Beag is a secluded lodge clad in Scotlarch® with SiOO:X Original, installed in 2018. As seen in the photo six years later, SiOO:X has helped the building blend seamlessly into its rugged surroundings — exactly as the architect intended.

The larch has silvered with a gentle softness, with the natural grain and texture of the timber still visible beneath the wash of grey. Despite Scotland’s famously wet climate, the cladding has aged gracefully, requiring minimal upkeep while retaining its character.

What we love: The weathering complements the landscape beautifully, giving the structure a sense of permanence and belonging in its remote setting.
