Introducing Burnblock® Fire Retardant with Remmers: a fully certified paint system
Architects and specifiers are increasingly drawn to the design flexibility of timber and appreciate the colour possibilities achieved through various coating systems. Where an enhanced reaction-to-fire performance is required, flame retardants can elevate timber’s natural fire rating to Euroclass B. Historically, combining paint systems with fire-retardant-treated timber has posed a challenge for coatings manufacturers. At Russwood, we’re meeting the demand for painted cladding with certified fire protection.

The challenge
- Coating compatibility: painted coatings and fire-retardant treatments have often conflicted, as fire retardants can alter how coatings bond to timber, resulting in poor performance.
- Fire performance: regulations require re-testing when additional coatings are applied over fire-treated timber to ensure fire performance is maintained. Many systems have failed these essential classification tests.
For specifiers this has limited aesthetic choice for many years.
The solution: Burnblock® with Remmers
In 2023, Russwood was proud to introduce SiOO:X with Burnblock, a years-long testing and development programme. This has been popular with customers and specifiers seeking the silver-grey appearance and durability benefits of SiOO:X with a Euroclass B fire performance.
Now, in 2025, we are again proud to introduce a new breakthrough to the UK market — a fully certified, factory coated paint system compatible with Burnblock fire-retardant treatment. Developed by trusted German manufacturer Remmers, the system can be tinted to a wide range of popular colours and is suitable for both interior and exterior use.
Remmers paint: the product behind the latest innovation
Remmers, a leading German manufacturer of high-performance paints and coatings, is widely trusted across Europe for exterior timber protection. They have successfully fire-tested this specialised coating system with Burnblock-treated timber and undertaken rigorous weather testing to confirm long-term durability and performance.
By adding Remmers and SiOO:X to our range of fire-compatible coating systems — Russwood can now offer architects an expanded colour palette, varied finish options, and tailored solutions for specific project requirements.
Available in a wide variety of colours, Remmers coatings are formulated to provide long-lasting protection against weathering, UV exposure, and moisture. All this, while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.
Benefits of Burnblock and certified coatings systems together
- Certified fire safety: fully tested with both the coating system and fire-retardant treatment, this combination provides proven, reliable fire protection for exterior timber cladding.
- Sustainability: Burnblock is a patented, 100% non-toxic fire retardant, safe for people and the environment — a significant advantage over many other fire treatments.
- Design flexibility: a wide range of colours allows architects to deliver bold, creative façades without compromising safety.
