Interior cladding support

Preparation

How can I calculate how much interior cladding I will need?

Firstly, calculate how many square metres your project will require, then add at least 10% onto the figure calculated. This allows for wastage or on-site damage to the timber. It is worth noting that the inconvenience and extra costs incurred of not ordering enough timber can be quite significant.

Which other items would you recommend to complete the Russwood interior cladding system?

Fixings – We have partnered with Austrian timber fixings experts, Sihga, to offer a range of innovative fixing systems designed to make your cladding look better and last longer. F-BohrFix® ZB Screws can be used for secret and face fixing. Advice on quantities required can be given at the time of purchase.

Is acclimatisation required?

The Moisture Content (MC) of all Interior Cladding is approx. 6%-10%MC, making it suitable for interior use. Acclimatisation is recommended for all products to allow the timber to meet equilibrium with its in-service environment and avoid issues once installed. 1-2 weeks is advised.

Installation

Should I fit to battens or directly to substrate?

Both are possible. If using battens, the recommended distance would be 400mm to 600mm centres. If fitting directly to the substrate, the studs should be located and fixed to.

What are the differences between face and secret fixing, and when should each be used?

Secret fixing has evolved as a design solution, and should only be used with the relevant profiles, which are available only in certain compatible timbers. The main difference between face and secret fixing is an aesthetic one.

Can the cladding be used vertically, as well as horizontally?

Yes, both are patterns are possible, however, the battens/studs will need to be at a 90 degree angle to the direction you wish to fit the interior cladding.

Finishing

Does the finished interior cladding require a protective coating?

No, the timber cladding we supply is inherently durable, meaning no protective coating is necessary if detailed and installed correctly. The decision to coat timber cladding is purely an aesthetic one.

If I wish to apply a coloured coating, how should I do this?

The majority of our Interior Cladding products are supplied unfinished, allowing a coloured coating to be applied on site, if the natural timber colour is not to your taste. We supply Osmo Oils in a number of different finishes and colours, all of which are resistant to water and dirt and are very durable.

Does my interior cladding require a fire retardant treatment?

For many domestic and smaller commercial projects, timber cladding can be used without a flame retardant. Building regulations impose certain restrictions on the fire class of cladding elements, in certain situations, and depending on the use class of the building (eg domestic / commercial / residential care etc). Please refer to our Fire retardant timber cladding page for more info. Always consult Building Control for advice on your project.

Maintenance

How do I clean my interior cladding?

Interior cladding can be simply dusted with a dry or damp cloth.

If the boards are marked, can they be repaired easily?

Many of our interior cladding options can be repaired on site with a surface sand. In some cases, board replacement can be considered, depending on the extent of the damage. Please contact us for advice.
