5 inspiring residential retrofits
Recently, it caught our attention that a number of architects upgraded their own houses with a retrofit. Since new trends often start with the architect themselves, it’s perhaps no surprise that we’ve seen a number of private projects following suit. Retrofits are done for a variety of reasons, amongst which: to create a new look, to increase sustainability, to create more living space, to increase the value of the asset. Often reasons go hand in hand.
As we liaise with architects, self-builders, and contractors alike, we thought readers might enjoy an overview of retrofit projects on which Russwood timber has been used in an inspiring way.
Conversion and extension
A recent project by Paterson Gordon Architecture converted Britain’s first ever fair-trade shop into a cozy home. The architect has made great use of Russwood SILA Select® Siberian Larch cladding to complement the original stone wall of the building, creating a warm and classic look.
Architect Scott Batty’s 1970s House Retrofit
Architect Scott Batty decided to retrofit his own house, opting for a new look and improved insulation and heating system. With this refurbishment, the aim was to improve the living space for family purposes and decrease the energy needed to heat the home and keep it warm. Whilst working towards this, Batty wanted to keep as much from the house structure the same, opting for adding and refurbishing rather than breaking down and rebuilding. The result is this stunning, energy-saving new look, starring Russwood SILA Select® Siberian Larch cladding, fixed with Grade 304 Ring Shank Nails.
We liked the original 1970s house – it made us smile – but it was cold and the layout was old fashioned. We knew we could work with it – we retrofitted – so you can still read the original house- rather than obliterating it. Our heating bills are down by 60% and we have saved on the Embodied Carbon associated with demolition and rebuilding.

Timber-Clad London Extension
A-Zero Architects created a stylish extension to this London house, making use of Russwood’s SILA Select® Siberian Larch cladding to create a smooth, modern look. In order to achieve a consistently weathered appearance, the timber was factory coated with SiOO:X, this combined with the extremely neat detailing makes for a striking aesthetic. The innovative design which combines the timber with large windows creates a feeling of light and space, whilst the original brickwork blends in well in the background.
Fern Cottage’s Wooden Jacket
In Abernethy forest, WT Architecture transformed an old stone cottage into a beautiful, open and light family home. The process involved adding an open plan extension, beautiful Russwood Oak Flooring and SILA Select® Siberian Larch cladded exterior, fixed with A2 grade stainless steel L-GoFix® Screws. Much of the old house remained, but the new look blends in perfectly with the surroundings and the home is more fitting to the owners’ needs.
Newtonmore’s Dreamy Cottage Conversion
Close to Russwood’s main office and sawmill, Loader Monteith Architects used black-coated Thermopine® to great effect by upgrading this beautifully-located stone cottage with openings to the views of the Glenfeshie hills. The new elements of the home focused on clean, sharp lines, and painting the cladding black allowed for a strong contrast to the neighbouring traditional cottage.
