Johnshaven Extension

Modern timber extension transforms coastal townhouse

When storms gather over the North Sea, Scotland’s east coast readies itself. The homes that line this exposed coastline have always been built to withstand the harsh weather that can blow in. And having stood strong against wind and tide since the 1830s, this Grade-C listed townhouse in Johnshaven, midway between Aberdeen and Dundee, is no exception. Its occupants engaged Annie Kenyon Architects to refurbish the original house and add a two-storey extension that would similarly shrug off wild weather. The timber-clad, glazing-rich result is both strikingly modern and highly complementary to the traditional townhouse.

Imbue® cladding fits the bill

The new extension contains a kitchen, dining and family space, and a top-floor living area to make the most of the sea views. Its success can be attributed to Annie Kenyon Architects’ talent for balancing aesthetics, function and environmental responsiveness.

One of the stand-out features of the extension is the relationship between the cladding, brise-soleil screen and glazing. For the former, Kenyon specified our Imbue™ product, attached in an open rainscreen arrangement.

We have been fortunate to specify and work alongside Russwood on various projects and are always aware of their varied, high-quality timber cladding products. What led us and our client to this specific cladding was its durability and weathering qualities whilst providing a clean, knot-free appearance,” explains Kenyon.

We helped the client and architect arrive at the Imbue cladding choice through site visits, a workshop tour and a few phone calls and emails back and forth. This thermally modified New Zealand plantation timber is ideal for such an exposed coastal location as it has excellent stability. Kenyon specified the cladding to have a Microtex® surface finish and SiOO:X coating, to further support its performance over time. It was secured using our FassadenClip® system with SIHGA L-Go Fix® screws, a secret fix solution that created the clean lines Kenyon envisioned.

Specifier tip: Imbue™ was previously known as Abodo Vulcan Flatsawn, and is a high-quality alternative to old-growth Western Red Cedar.

A creative solution to reduce glare

Creating a light-filled space that makes the most of those unending sea views presents some challenges, particularly when combined with the home’s south-easterly aspect and fairly public setting. Having considered a range of solutions, Kenyon settled on incorporating a screen made from fins in Abodo® Vulcan Vertical Grain, to soften the sweep of glazing and lend balance to the façade.

This brise-soleil serves a vital role in moderating fluctuations in the home’s temperature, casting necessary shade on sunny days while also providing privacy. It also enhances the building’s energy efficiency by shielding it from rain and wind and adding extra insulation. It’s an almost sculptural installation, and Kenyon pays tribute to the teamwork that went into its creation.

“Russwood collaborated with us to find an appropriate timber profile, depth and spacing to facilitate the 1.8-metre span between external posts,” she says. “To navigate round the screen support posts, we felt the cleanest aesthetic detail was to mitre each corner, and thanks to the skilled craftsmanship from the contractor, we have created the desired effect beautifully.”

The Russwood team have been incredibly helpful and knowledgeable throughout all stages of work. From the initial site visits and workshop tour, they have supported us with specific insights on all product specifications, technical detailing, fixing recommendations and on-site problem solving.

SiOO:X coating complements the stone townhouse

The screening and cladding were both factory-coated in SiOO:X, a wood treatment of Swedish origin that protects timber products while giving them a uniform weathered appearance – even large expanses such as this. A colourless SiOO:X is available, but for the Johnshaven home, Kenyon selected the Mid Grey tone to subtly tie in with the existing stonework.

“The chosen palette set out not to mimic but to be subservient to the existing form, respecting its original features and conveying subtle nods to the original dwellinghouse,” she says.

Light-toned timber indoors and out

Inside the home, our European Oak Flooring planks in Original create a warm and lightweight feel throughout the first floor, complementing the client’s interior style and facilitating a seamless transition from the modern extension through to the original property. The prime grade flooring that Kenyon specified has a durable, smooth finish that works perfectly with the wall and skirting board finishes.

Completed project is a tribute to thoughtful design

In some home renovation projects, priority is given to style or to speed. Not at Johnshaven. Here, driven by the clients, sustainability and material choice were central. Our natural timber cladding and beautiful oak flooring ensure the extension feels timeless while delivering long-lasting performance in a challenging coastal climate.

Commenting on the cladding, Kenyon says, “There have been no signs of defects from corrosive salt spray or UV exposure, reaffirming its weather resistance and low maintenance qualities. It is responding well to its coastal environment/setting and all parties are delighted with the choice.”
